Production: CodeTV’s Web Dev Challenge

What happens when six developers, a high-stakes challenge, and a world-class production team come together in Salt Lake City? You get the latest episode of Web Dev Challenge, a wildly creative developer game show sponsored by Mux and hosted by Jason Lengstorf.

This summer, The Black Futurist Media had the opportunity to help bring that episode to life.

I was invited by Johnny Jones and his company, 33 Creative Partners, to serve as a producer on the show’s Salt Lake City production days. It was our first time working in SLC, and the experience delivered in every way. The energy, the execution, and the strength of the concept made it stand out. It’s not every day you get to help build a game show.

The Concept
This episode’s challenge was simple in format but wildly imaginative in spirit: build the most delightfully devious and absurd video player UX possible, all within five hours. Using Mux’s open-source Media Chrome library, the teams were asked to push the boundaries of user experience design in hilarious and painful ways.

Think intentionally bad UI, created by talented developers who knew exactly how to make a simple button feel like an obstacle course. The results were equal parts chaotic and brilliant.

My Role
As producer, I’m responsible for leading the full scope of production. In this case that meant serving as the central point of communication and coordination across all departments, including technical crew, venue staff, talent, and client stakeholders. I handle hiring, manage production logistics, and ensure the creative vision aligned with the schedule and deliverables.

From pre-production through wrap, I oversee the sourcing of on-screen and behind-the-scenes talent, facilitate technical setup, and keep production moving smoothly and on time. Working alongside an incredible team, we delivered a high-quality, broadcast-ready episode that captured the unique energy and humor of the Web Dev Challenge concept.

Why This Matters
At The Black Futurist Media, we specialize in producing high-concept, story-driven content across multiple formats. Whether it’s podcasts, documentaries, branded video, or live events, we bring strategic thinking and premium execution to every project.

Web Dev Challenge was a chance to do just that for a show with a niche but passionate audience. It also reminded us that great content can be both technical and entertaining when it’s executed with intention.

The episode is now live on Code TV, and it’s a great example of what can happen when content strategy, production quality, and creativity all show up in the same room.
